30 children spend a week at IMN Camp experiencing nature
The Junior/Teen Indiana Master Naturalist Camp held the first week of June was declared a success by Jody Heaston, state coordinator of the IMN program. More than 30 children ages of 8 to 16 enjoyed a week of activities and education on the many facets of the natural resources of Indiana.
“Without the dedication and enthusiasm of the 35-plus volunteers, the camp would not have been possible,” Heaston said. “The support of the volunteers provided that personal touch that kids respond to, and I am always amazed at how many adults show up to help.”
Volunteers led daily nature hikes, conducted lessons, prepared snacks and organized materials needed for the next activity, not to mention all the pre-camp preparations.
“Water Day is always a favorite with the kids,” Heaston said. “Without volunteers willing to ride in the canoes, rowboats and paddleboats, we would have to cancel that event. Also many of the kids experience for the first time the excitement of catching a fish. Our volunteers patiently instruct and assist each one who needs bait put on a hook, a reel untangled, or a fish taken off the line.”
“I’ve witnessed other summer camp situations,” said Eric Larr, parent of a camper. “This one ranks as the best I’ve seen. It is organized, runs smoothly and is filled with caring individuals.”
That is largely due to the great volunteers who join in on the fun and share their love for nature with the youngsters.
