Friends host first Fall Fest Scavenger Hunt with dragon, spooky sites and more

By Kathy Curry

On Oct. 14, Friends of Ouabache State Park (FOOSP) hosted its first Fall Fest Scavenger Hunt from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of two fall festival weekends at Ouabache State Park. Despite the cold and rain, 28 teams of two or more (more than 100 people) braved the weather to find eight spooky signs of fall throughout the park.

Participants started at the east end of Camp View Shelter in the campground, where they were greeted by a fire-breathing dragon. Each team was given a card with eight clues as to the location of eight “spooky” sites and a park map with instructions that they were to take selfies of the entire group at each of the sites.

Once they found all eight and had taken selfies, they were to return their cards to the shelter and show off their selfies. If they were able to find all eight of the displays, the team was entered for a chance to win a free 2024 Indiana state park pass. Participants also were provided a snack on completion that was donated by Alan and Gwen Daugherty and Jodi Heaston.

Twenty-four teams were able to complete the hunt and had a chance to win a park pass or other door prizes. Winners of the 2024 Indiana State Park passes were Elixa Runk from Monticello and Lindsey Stimpson from Decatur.

Al Arnold donated four door prizes, buckets of various Halloween treats, which were delivered to Kayanna Brummett of Lynn, the Sunderman sisters of Van Buren, Katie Spakenberg of Carmel and Scott Mentzer of Bluffton. Also donated by an anonymous donor was a pumpkin candle holder, which was awarded to Cheyenne Wykins of Bluffton.

If you were not able to be there, you missed out on seeing some fun and creative Halloween displays, including a giant spider and web, “Bones” the park volunteer, a sun-bathing skeleton and a sandcastle maker, a fishing skeleton and his boney dog, hiking scarecrows, a baseball-loving skeleton, a skeleton who “had to go” and a three-eyed creature.

Displays were created by Kathy and Kraig Schwartz, Kent and Amy Koteskey, Alan Daugherty, Rose Nevil, Devon Thone and Quinn and Kathy Curry.

Thank you to all who made our first Fall Fest Scavenger Hunt possible. Hope to see you again next year!
