Peek in to the Past

When the property was operated as Wells County State Forest and Game Preserve from 1935-1961, an icehouse was used. Blocks of ice were collected from Kunkel Lake and stored in the icehouse. The blocks were layered with sawdust so they would not stick together. The icehouse had the capacity to store 3,000 tons of ice. The ice was used in the summer for refrigeration purposes. The icehouse was located near where the baseball diamond is today.
